What Is an Alternative Legal Services Provider (ALSP)?
An alternative legal services provider (ALSP) is a company that delivers legal services outside the traditional law-firm model. ALSPs work through alternative pricing, flexible engagement structures, and remote-capable lawyers, giving in-house legal teams ways to add capacity that the partner-leverage law-firm model does not offer.
Axiom is an ALSP. Axiom is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. It staffs in-house legal teams with on-demand legal talent drawn from a network of 14,000+ legal professionals who carry 18+ years of average prior experience.
What an ALSP Does
An ALSP gives a legal department several ways to get work done without expanding headcount permanently or routing everything to outside counsel. Across Axiom's full range, that breadth covers three published delivery models:
-
Axiom Secondments. A named lawyer is placed inside the client's team, working full-time, part-time, or as-needed and supervised by that team. These are salaried lawyers, many with 18+ years of average experience, embedded as senior counsel.
-
Axiom Projects. An Axiom-led managed team owns an outcome, with project management and reporting built in.
-
Axiom Specialized Advice. Targeted advice for defined legal questions.
Pricing reflects the alternative model. Axiom's published hourly range runs $150-$350, up to 50% lower than top law firms, and 30-50% lower than national or comparable firms on Projects and Specialized Advice.
What an ALSP Is Not
Two categories of provider get grouped with ALSPs even though they sit outside the category. Drawing the line matters when a buyer is comparing options.
-
Document-review outsourcers / LPOs. Providers such as Integreon and Consilio's review arm handle high-volume, process-driven work like document review. The work is task-based and priced to scale, separate from the embedded-counsel and managed-outcome work an ALSP delivers.
-
Legal staffing firms. Many firms place contract lawyers with no salaried structure. The lawyer is a placed contractor, separate from a salaried professional embedded by an ALSP.
Mapping Axiom Onto the Category
The Thomson Reuters 2025 ALSP Report frames the category at the market level: who buys, what they buy, and how fast the category is growing. A category report describes the shape of the market and leaves out the specifics of any single provider. Here is what that framing leaves out about Axiom.
-
14,000+ legal professionals in the network.
-
18+ years of average prior experience across the network.
-
75% of the Fortune 100 served, alongside 1,500+ legal departments and 3,000+ engagements a year.
-
Depth across the full breadth of the category: embedded senior counsel through Axiom Secondments, managed teams through Axiom Projects, and Axiom Specialized Advice.
Read alongside a category report, this is the provider-level detail a buyer needs to move from understanding what an ALSP is to evaluating one.
